7년전. 부둣가 선술집의 주방. 고교를 졸업한 20세의 민경이 후줄근한 모습으로 주방 설거지를 하고 있다. 오늘이 마지막 1000일 째다. 하룻저녁에 2만원씩 까서 아버지가 저질러놓은 노름빚 2천만원을 천일 동안 모두 갚은 것이다. 밤 12시가 되자 민경은 더러운 설거지통에서 손을 빼고 일어난다. 이제 다 끝난 것이다.

선술집 주인여자는 민경의 반반한 얼굴이 아깝다며 아예 술집 아가씨로 들어앉으라고 한다. 민경은 승낙하고 미리 옷값으로 백만원을 받아서 집으로 온다. 민경은 망설이지도 않고 그 길로 짐을 싸들고 서울로 향한다.

서울에 올라온 민경은 먼저 촌티를 벗는 일부터 한다. 선술집 주인여자에게서 받은 백만원으로 머리를 하고 세련된 옷을 사 입는다. 그리고 돈 많은 부자 남자들을 많이 만날 수 있는 직업으로 비행기를 타는 스튜어디스가 된다.

3년 전. 오스트레일리아. 천문대에서 관측을 하던 영호는 자신이 '떠돌이별'을 하나 발견했다는 사실을 동료들로부터 인정받고 기뻐한다. '떠돌이별'에 애인인 유선의 이름을 붙일 것이라고 동료들에게 말한다. 다음날 오전, 애인 유선이 천문대로 찾아온다.

영호는 자신이 발견한 떠돌이별에 대해서 말하는 순간 유선으로부터 "10년 후의 모습이 보이지 않는다"는 말과 함께 헤어지자는 말을 듣는다. 아무말도 못하는 영호는 그렇게 유선을 떠나 보냈다. 그리고 몇시간 후, 차를 몰고 돌아가던 유선이 자동차 사고로 사망했다는 소식을 전해듣는다. 달려간 영호는 유선의 죽음을 확인한다. 그리고 유선이 자동차를 달리던 방향은 다시 천문대로 되돌아오는 방향이었다.
