The Witch of the West is Dead The Movie

[서쪽의 마녀가 죽었다 ]

The Witch of the West Is Dead (西の魔女が死んだ Nishi no Majo ga Shinda) is a Japanese movie based on a popular children's novel written by Kaho Nashiki and originally published in 1994. The movie was directed by Shunichi Nagasaki and will be released sometime in 2008.

Plot summary

Mai is a 13-year-old asthma-sufferer and recently started refusing to go to school. Her parents decide to send her to the countryside where her British-born grandmother lives. Her grandmother is rumored to be a witch so Mai asks her for witch lessons. She happily agrees, but the lessons actually end up teaching Mai about taking control of her life and being more responsible.

Based on Nashiki Kaho's award-winning children's novel, The Witch of the West is Dead is another outstanding work from acclaimed filmmaker Nagasaki Shunichi, the director of Kuro-obi, Heart, Beating in the Dark, and Christmas in August. The subtly moving film flips gently through pastoral pastimes, adolescent insecurities, and coming-of-age rites to portray one unforgettable summer for a young girl and her grandmother. Raised in Japan and fluent in Japanese, veteran American actress Sachi Parker appears in her first Japanese film as the witchly grandmother who quietly guides her granddaughter, played by newcomer Takahashi Mayu. Ryo (Canary, Casshern) completes the multi-generation triangle as the mother.
